Die Ausstellung La Zona identifiziert verschiedene Kategorien von “Zone”. Inhaltlicher Bezugspunkt ist die Zone in Andrej Tarkowskijs Film Stalker: ein Territorium, das gleichzeitig abgesichert und verlassen, tödlich und heilbringend, unkontrollierbar und ständig in Veränderung ist. Sieben Jahre vor der Nuklearkatastrophe in Tschernobyl gedreht, gilt Stalker als Vorwegnahme dieses Ereignisses und seiner Folgen. La Zona begreift sich als Science-Fiction-Erzählung über die vielgestaltige Realität der “Zone” und der in ihr mehrfach gebrochenen Idee von Fortschritt und Aufklärung.

The exhibition La Zona identifies different categories of “zone”. The main reference is the zone in Andrei Tarkovsky’s film Stalker – a territory that is at once enclosed and abandoned, deadly and healing, unpredictable, and always changing. Filmed seven years before the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, Stalker is in retrospect considered as an anticipation of this catastrophe and its consequences. La Zona constructs a science fiction narrative out of the polymorphic reality of the “zone” as well as the fractured idea of progress and enlightenment.

Please join us for the preview of Other Drawings by George Bolster, Jenny Keane, Ins A Kromminga, Breda Lynch and Kieran Moore on Thursday 8 March, 6-8pm.

Other Drawings is an exhibition of artworks by five artists who have made drawing a central part of their artistic practice. All engage in creating poetic expressions of otherness, which query definitions of sexuality, subvert normative ideals and explore attributes of liminal personae. The medium of drawing is realized with both modesty and ambition, from the small, precise and intimate sketch, to drawing as installation that interacts with the gallery space and drawing as performative spectacle.

About the artists’ work:

The central core of George Bolster‘s practice is an examination of belief systems. His scepticism about these systems, political or religious is contrasted by a fascination with the idea of belief. Religious Art has been popular culture and propaganda. Bolster examines the representation of this subject, deconstructing the accepted narrative/conventions presented with the introduction of contemporary elements eg. hi-fi headphones, logos and gothic tattoos. Through the quotation of pop music and street culture, his work engages a wide range of ideas, such as: the equation of belief with contemporary culture; the re-contextualisation of religious figures; and the curiosity, bewilderment and even envy that accompany an aporetic experience of religion. He is interested in the exploration and invention of contemporary allegory and views look at religious buildings as the first sites of fusion of the arts.

Jenny Keane’s practice is focused on the word ‘horrific’. Visually, her work deals with society’s fascination with horror films – rather than being a fan, Keane’s interest in horror stems from the negative representation of the monstrous female body, and the subversion of these depictions. Through video installation and performative drawings, the work explores the self-portrait in an attempt to investigate the dichotomy between fear and desire, its relationship to language and connection to the (female) body. The work focuses on concepts of abjection and liminality alongside the idea of compulsive repetition, a pause or loop that subverts the constructions of narrative.

The topics in Ins A Kromminga‘s work stem from his_her personal experiences as an intersex person. Both the history of otherness and political activism inform his_her practice. Mutants, Monsters, Freaks and Misfits are incorporating the fears of a norm-constrained culture and represent the boundaries of the acceptable – reflecting the face of the regulators who made them. The expansive visual and conceptual material of transgression becomes part of his_her vocabulary and meets the agendas and ideas of social and queer politics and human rights issues. The interconnection of scale variations of the small sized works and their clustering within the wall filling drawing respond to his_her expectation of reading apparently personal or private issues within a social context and thus to always understand them as politically relevant.

Breda Lynch references gothic worlds in her work, which question ‘what is considered traditional ‘normality’. This is in a sense a night or ‘noir’ world where extremes and uncertainties of sexuality, morality and power exist shadowing the prevalent social ethos. The gothic operates within what Freud terms the ‘uncanny’, which could be described as the fear of the new and unknown. But the gothic world is a dark one, where it is impossible to see certainties. The fact that there are no certainties is much more unsettling than any supernatural imagery that the gothic evokes.’ (Greg McCartney – Director, North West Visual Arts Archive, Ireland, 2007).

Kieran Moore’s main sources of inspiration are to be found in the late 1960s and early 1970s: the camp of Glam rock, the suburban paganism of self-styled ‘King of the Witches’ Alex Sanders, the far out mélange of gender confusion and Aquarian age excess of Russ Meyer’s ‘Beyond the Valley of the Dolls’, The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-Haired Men, the unkempt pulchritude of ‘Jaybird’ magazine and the writings of H P Lovecraft. (…) Kieran’s own gods straddle the margins of medieval folklore and a transgressive dress sense part inspired by the sleeve of David Bowie’s The Man Who Sold the World (1970). There is a sense of something being awry, not quite right, not quite covered and where it is not quite covered surprises the viewer that it is either a pre-adolescent male or a shaved adult of feminine features.

This exhibition will explore ways in which artists today continue to challenge, subvert, or deconstruct hegemonic notions of heteronormative identity in contemporary visual culture.

Through video, photography, drawing, painting, and installation, the work on display will offer an eclectic and dynamic representation of ‘other’ in today’s society.

Reisewege in andere Welten? Der Begriff Wurmloch ist nicht nur Science-Fiction-Fans vertraut. Die fragilen Gebilde, die sich für eine extrem kurze Zeitspanne öffnen und dann wieder schließen, können zu Abkürzungen zwischen sehr weit voneinander entfernten Reisepunkten werden. Einen Nachteil haben sie allerdings: Sie sind bisher nicht nachweisbar.
Da das Wurmloch ein hypothetisches Gebilde ist, wissen wir nicht, in welchen zeitlichen Abständen es sich schließt und öffnet. Wir können nicht sicher sein, ob eine losgeschickte Sendung stecken bleibt oder ob sie womöglich an einem nicht programmierten Reiseziel ankommt. Weder wissen wir, was in der Zwischenzeit auf dem Weg mit der Information geschieht, noch in welcher Form sie ihr Ziel erreicht. Eine Beschreibung des Wurmlochs als Unfallstrecke ist somit naheliegend.

Der Tintenstrahldrucker als Musik- und Animationsinstrument: In Barbara Hindahls Video-Sound-Projektion entsteht eine abstrakte Erzählstruktur, für die Unschärfen und Interferenzen der Bild- und Filmgenerierung sowie Soundcharakteristika eine wichtige Rolle spielen. In ihren Raumzeichnungen/Interventionen arbeitet sie mit dem Kontrast zwischen künstlerischer Setzung und Realität. Eine in den Raum gesetzte Zeichnung kann nur von einem festgelegten Punkt aus als zweidimensionales Bild erkannt werden, das über dem Raum schwebt. Von allen anderen Standorten ist sie lediglich als unregelmäßige Verteilung von Zeichen wahrnehmbar.

Installationen und Zeichnungen von Ins A Kromminga zersetzen Geschlechter- und Körpernormen des von uns bewohnten Teils des Universums. Risse und Ränder falten sich schon längst über unseren Alltag, die Löchrigkeit des einst so familiären Teppichs erlaubt Sprünge hinaus ins Fremde und wieder zurück in das veränderte Hier. Der Unterschied zwischen Uns und Denen verliert zunehmend an Schärfe, und schließlich verschmelzen die Differenzen zu einer neuen Komplexität und gewinnen damit eine weitere Dimension.

Karen Scheper zeichnet Textuniversen und entwickelt daraus schwarz-weiße Objekte und raumgreifende Assemblagen. So trifft Einsteins berühmte Formel E=mc2 als formsprengende Blasenkonstruktion auf die wandfüllende Grafik einer Gitternetzkonstruktion und Passagen aus Science-Fiction-Romanen, in denen multiple Raum-, Zeit- und Realitätsverzerrungen beschrieben werden. Die Devise heißt KWATSCH. Selbstverständlich geht es hier nicht um Unsinn, sondern um ein Geräusch: das Stapfen in der Zeitlichkeit und das stille Stottern im Raum-Zeit-Kontinuum.

Veronika Witte ist daran interessiert, wie Körper mit identischer Matrix durch äußere Einflüsse oder durch konkrete Manipulation ihre Erscheinungen verändern. Der Übertragungsvorgang des »Sicher Geglaubten« spielt dabei eine große Rolle, da er Festschreibungen auflöst ? seien sie biologischer oder kultureller Natur. Sie treten in eine Übermittlungs- und ? unter Umständen fehlerhafte ? Übertragungsschleife ein. Dieser Vorgang, als Kommunikation gedacht, ist eine Art »Stille Post«. Wittes skulpturale Übersetzungen beschriebener zukünftiger Körper Anderer, Fotografien vom lauten Flüstern des eigenen Namens in kulturell fremden Kontexten oder pulsierende visuelle Zersetzungsstrukturen medialer Bilder befragen den Zusammenhang von Erscheinung, Form und Wesen, der sich beim Gang durchs Wurmloch aus der Determinierung der Doppelhelix löst.
